VAIO E Series review

Since Sony refreshed the E Series in 2012 and got rid of the old textured plastic design and brought in the new slicker redesign, the laptop has improved both in looks and in quality. The aluminium cover adds a very nice touch and helps add to the premium VAIO feel, something that the last E Series lacked. Thankfully, Sony has still kept the price of the E Series the same, which makes the newer model even more impressive. Based solely on looks, the E Series does not seem like a budget model by any means. The keyboard is one of the best out there; and the newer touchpad also works very well. There are now four USB ports on the E Series, with one of them supporting USB 3.0. The configuration options are quite extensive, with a choice of processors available on the 14-inch, 15.5-inch and 17.3-inch models. The 11.6-inch model feels like a premium netbook, with an AMD CPU but shares the same high-end design. The 15.5-inch version has a very big drawback in the form of its relatively low-res 1366x768 pixel display. Competing laptops with higher resolution displays are only slightly more expensive than the S Series which is a negative point. The displays on the S Series are quite good with very good colour reproduction and above-average viewing angles. The newer E Series features quite light designs as well and the battery performance has also improved considerably. Considering the premium design, the lower-end configurations of the S Series are especially remarkable as the high-end design remains but the overall price goes down. Even with a high-end configuration, the S Series still features quite competitive laptops with the design easily matching more premium laptops like the Dell XPS 15. The main advantage the E Series has over its competition is its premium looks and high quality construction, something missing in most budget laptops. Even though laptops like the Lenovo G570 and the HP Pavilion G6 easily beat the S Series based on sheer value, those laptops still feel like cheap models in front of the Sony VAIO E Series.
