Pavilion G6 review

Like most budget laptops, the HP Pavilion G6 is not meant for style-conscious users. The design is generic and the build quality is quite poor, with the plastic body easily flexing at several points such as the palm rest. The weight of the Pavilion G6 is identical to most comparable laptops on the market. Unlike most budget laptops, however, the Pavilion G6 offers dedicated graphics options consisting of the AMD Radeon 6000/7000 series and an optional Blu-ray drive. A wide range of CPUs are available with the Pavilion G6, including the Intel Dual-Core, Core i3 and Core i5 CPUs and the AMD A4, A6 and A8 CPUs. Such an extensive list of CPU options cannot be found with most laptops. The display provided a good picture, but the viewing angles were poor. The speakers, made by Altec Lansing, were quite loud but offered poor sound quality. The track pad was quite a standard unit and was okay to use. The keyboard was okay for typing, but the small arrow keys felt weird during gaming. Lower configuration models containing AMD CPUs with dedicated GPUs performed much better than their Intel counterparts with built-in Intel graphics. The battery performance of the Pavilion G6 was disappointing as the laptop could not run as long as most laptops in the same range. Also, the upgrade to a quad-core A8 CPU was quite cheap which really helped in increasing the value offered by the Pavilion G6. Hard drives up to 750GB are available which are what most laptops in the same range offer. Compared to the Lenovo G570, the Pavilion G6 brings some additional features such as a Blu-ray drive and an option for AMD processors and dedicated graphics, but loses points for its low build quality and uninteresting design. The G570 meanwhile offers a much better keyboard and better build quality for a comparable price. This makes the G6 one of the better budget options as it has several unique features but the build quality has us questioning whether this machine may be durable enough for daily use. Besides that, the Pavilion G6 is an excellent budget choice.
