Inspiron 15R review

The appearance of the Inspiron 15R is a standard Dell affair with the option of swappable covers which is a great way of personalising your laptop. In comparison with newer laptops from the likes of Asus or Lenovo, the 15R is a bit heavy at six pounds. The keyboard has a separate numeric pad which is a useful addition often absent in competing laptops. The keyboard itself is quite good for prolonged use but the glossy plastic body of the laptop attracts fingerprints like anything. The display panel itself is quite good, with good brightness and vivid colours, although the resolution and viewing angles could have been better. The speakers are average with loud volume but they lack sound quality. One of the main drawbacks of the Inspiron 15R is its battery performance. Under heavy load, the laptop lasted less than 2.5 hours, which was very poor. The performance was decent with the base configuration, but as the spec goes up, the price for the Inspiron 15R goes up rapidly. This would be problematic as a high-configuration 15R costs quite a lot and definitely moves out of the budget category. This would mean that its price would be comparable to more high-end models such as the XPS 15z which is a better laptop than the Inspiron 15R in almost every way. A base-configuration model 15R on the other hand offers excellent value for money and being a budget model, the plastic body can be excused. This means that if you are in the market for a budget model, the 15R is worth a look; but if you want a better spec, it is best that you look elsewhere because even with the upgraded internals the outer shell of the 15R is retained along with its budget looks. Also, at that end of the budget spectrum, more premium choices such as the Sony VAIO S appear while the 15R is stuck with some budget features such as a 720p display.
