MacBook Pro review, guide and deals

MacBook Pro Overview

MacBook ProThe Apple MacBook Pro is a line of laptops from Apple running the Mac OS X operating system. The MacBook Pro line includes both 13-inch and 15-inch models and features unibody aluminum construction on all the models. Although primarily built for OS X, MacBook Pro also has the capability to run Windows. The 13-inch model only runs on built-in Intel HD 4000 graphics while the 15-inch models also come with the option for the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M graphics unit. The MacBook Pro line runs on Intel’s latest 3rd generation Core i5 and Core i7 processors and includes the option to be equipped with SSD drives instead of hard disks.

MacBook Pro review

The first noticeable thing about the MacBook Pro is its distinctive design - machined out of a solid block of aluminum and with an edge-to-edge glass display. This gives it a distinctive high-end look and makes it very solid which is important for a laptop which inevitably will get more wear and tear than a desktop machine. The 13-inch MacBook Pro comes with a 1,280x800 pixel display. Its main competitors are the Sony VAIO S-series and the HP Folio 13. Both offer good value for money and better specs but cannot run OS X and aren’t as sleek. As well as the 13", there are two completely different models in the MacBook Pro range with 15-inch screens. The first model features a regular 1,440x900 display and is otherwise similar to the 13-inch model with the usual ports such as Ethernet and a DVD drive. The second model features a high-res 'Retina' display of 2,880x1,800 pixels resolution. The Retina display model does not include a DVD drive or a built-in Ethernet port but comes in a slimmer body. As the Retina display model only uses SSDs, it costs much more than a similar, non-Retina MacBook Pro. The non-Retina MacBook Pro is an excellent choice for business and professional use while the Retina display model is geared more towards multimedia users. The Retina display has a resolution higher than any laptop seen to date and hence is unique. The non-Retina model faces competition from the Dell XPS and the Sony VAIO S which both offer better value but cannot compete with the MacBook on looks. The main selling point of the MacBook Pro, along with the MacBook Air, is Apple's OS X operating system which Mac users swear is vastly superior to the Windows operating system used by all other laptops. The MacBooks are the only laptops that can run this operating system - no others can, but the MacBooks can all run Windows as well as OS X, giving the best of both worlds in a beautifully designed and well-specified package.
